Auto safety

Driving is something most of us do daily.  It gets us to where we want to go safely most of the time.  However, in the U.S. about 40,000 driving fatalities occur annually.  Looking around you as you drive you can clearly see some drivers being unsafe.  Imagine if we could get everyone to drive more carefully and maybe cut the accident rate in half!  We could save a lot of lives.

One of the most significant causes of accidents is drivers being in a rush to get to their destination.  If everyone would allow extra time, especially when it's really important to get there on time, we would all be safer.  Fortunately with Google maps you can check shortly before you leave to see about how long it will take to get to your destination.  Allow 20 percent extra time for unforeseen delays.

When you are about to go somewhere, check to make sure you have good visibility, your mirrors are adjusted properly, and your lights are on if visibility is low.

Other tips to make sure you drive safely:  choose a lane and stay in it.  Every time you switch lanes you risk having someone else switch and run into you.  Allow enough space between your car and the car in front of you.  This is particularly important when the car behind you is too close--you can brake more gradually so they are less likely to run into you.

Pay primary attention to driving.  Avoid distractions like texting or disciplining children.  Take the safe driving pledge:  I pledge to always be a safe, careful driver.  In bad weather delay your trip if possible.

When you come to a signal watch for cars that may run a red light.
