Children--what to tell

In our world today young children may use alcohol or drugs, smoke, have sex, or be abducted by a stranger or someone known to the child. I encourage you to talk to your children about these issues several times when you think they are ready to hear about these problems.  Middle school or even elementary school can be the start of alcohol, smoking or sex and of course a child could be abducted at any age.  To help prevent abduction tell your children what to do if someone tries to abduct them such as yelling or using a cell phone to call 911.  Tell them that sex can transmit disease and cause pregnancy and maybe when they are older to use birth control or a condom if they do have sex.  In addition if you have guns in your home tell them the only acceptable use is to defend themselves against an intruder. Remember that a gun is far more likely to be used for suicide, homicide or unintentional shooting rather than for protection against an intruder.
