Doctor visits

We all need to go to the doctor sometimes.  Here are some thoughts about what to do when you go to the doctor.

Arrive 15-20 minutes ahead of your scheduled time in order to fill out forms and get checked in.  Make and bring a list of questions for the doctor about your health concerns.  Ask for the possible side effects of any medication you are starting as well as the risks of not taking the medication.  If you do start the medication and experience negative side effects contact the doctor immediately.  Don't stop the medication without talking to the nurse or doctor.

In this era of electronic medical records it is a good idea to establish an account in order to access your records. Then if you need to look at any test results you can do so online.  Remember to get a written summary of your visit if available.

Be sure to follow up with any medications the doctor prescribes or tests the doctor wants to do or referrals to a specialist.  Remember we all have medical issues so there is never a reason to be ashamed of any medical problems you have.
