Hiking
It is a great joy to be able to explore the outdoors and see the amazing views that nature affords. Hiking can be a good social activity as well. It can be a fun family tradition.
Get a good pair of boots, some socks such as smart wool socks, hiking poles, and a pack to carry food, water, and warm clothes and rain gear.
Let two people know where you are going and when you plan to be back so they can initiate a search for you if you should run into unforeseen trouble. Be sure to let these people know that you have returned safely. You should also carry an emergency device such as a personal locater beacon or satellite messenger for areas where there is no cell phone coverage. In areas where there is good cell phone coverage bring your well charged cell phone.
Some of the hazards of hiking are bad weather, ice, and high altitude sickness. Check the weather forecast before you go and only cross ice with great care if you have good micro spikes or if there is no danger of a severe fall. Altitude sickness occurs when you go to a much higher altitude than you are acclimated (much higher than you have recently been). If you have symptoms such as headache, nausea, shortness of breath and difficulty exercising or other symptoms that may be due to the altitude go to a much lower altitude immediately. If you cannot hike or drive to a lower altitude or if symptoms are severe call for help.
Focus on stepping carefully and staying upright while hiking. Don't go anywhere where you are not confident that you can make it safely or return successfully. Enjoy the beauty around you and take lots of pictures!
