Insurance

The types of insurance you may need include health, auto, home, disability and life insurance.

Health is usually provided through your job and auto insurance is required according to your home state.  For home insurance you will probably want to get replacement coverage and decide whether you want to insure for earthquake, flood, and fire depending on your location.  Shop around for your best deal and bundle home and auto for greater savings.  Many people go without disability insurance but you should consider whether you would need it if you could no longer work.

The best use of life insurance is to replace lost income to the family that would be needed if the person died.  Term insurance is generally the least expensive and again you should shop around.  If you have no children and your spouse works you probably don't need life insurance unless you wouldn't have enough income to make the payments you have.  Remember that life insurance may increase your risk of violence from the beneficiaries.

In general you do better being self-insured because the insurance company makes profits.  You have to decide how much you can afford to lose if you had to pay the cost yourself for all of the insurances.
