Personal safety

Take good care of yourself by observing the following personal safety tips.

When you are going to be out in the sun for more than 15 minutes or shorter if you tend to burn easiy apply sunscreen to all exposed skin.  Start 30 minutes before exposure and rub in thoroughly.  If you are going to be out in the sun all day you may want to reapply after 4 hours.  Make sure you have an SPF (Skin Protection Factor) of at least 30.  If the UV (UltraViolet) index is low----for example early in the morning or late in the evening--you may be able to skip the sunscreen.  Also use lip screen for your lips.

If you notice a mole on your body you may want to see a dermatologist if it meets some of the criteria for cancer.  The American Cancer Society has developed the warning signs of possible skin cancer--ABCDE for Asymmetry of the mole, Border of the mole being irregular or not well defined, Color of the mole being of different color shades, Diameter of the mole being bigger than the size of a pencil eraser and E for Evolving for a changing mole.  You can find more details of these attributes on the internet.

Be sure to wear your seat belt at all times as much as possible when riding in a car even when the car is stopped because another car may strike your car at any time.  Also wear the seat belt as much as possible when flying in a plane as turbulence may occur at any time.

It is a good idea to have several smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors in your residence.

Be sure to check the batteries regularly or pay attention to the battery replacement warning and replace as needed.

Even though some people feel safer with a gun in the house you are generally far safer without one.  This is because a gun is far more likely to be used to kill a friend or loved one or yourself or for an accidental shooting  than to protect yourself against an intruder.  The exception may be when you have a credible threat from someone to kill you and you truly believe that person is going to harm you.

You should protect your eyes from the sun whenever you are outdoors by wearing sunglasses that filter out 100 percent of the UV radiation unless it is too dark to see with the sunglasses on.  Also get regular eye exams.
