Travel

Most of us travel by plane or car.  The following suggestions may make the trip smoother.

If travelling by air arrive 2-3 hours ahead of the flight to allow time to check in and go through security.  2 hours for a domestic flight and 3 hours for an international flight.  It is better to get there early and have to wait than to be stressed out because you are late.  If flying out of the country make sure to bring your passport. If you get TSA pre-check you may be able to get through the security check faster.  Pack important items in your carry-on luggage and pack any sharp objects such as knives, razors, and scissors in your checked luggage.  Remember liquids in your carry on luggage should be at most 3.5 fluid ounces and should all fit in a one quart bag.  Remember not to bring any hazardous materials in your luggage.  Leave your ID and boarding pass out except when going through the security scan. You may want to put them in your carry on just prior to going through the scan.  If you don't have TSA pre-check you will need to remove your shoes before going through the scan. Make sure your luggage is easily identified as yours with your name, address and phone number in case it gets delayed.  Bring some snacks and a container for water in your carry on luggage to fill in the airport after you have gone through security or you can buy them in the airport.

Remember that flying is statistically much safer than driving even though they may be equally nerve wracking.

If going by car make sure the car has sufficient gas and make sure all of the windows are clear.  Make sure you have good visibility for checking your blind spots.  You can use Google maps to choose the fastest route and estimate when you will arrive. Allow an extra 20 percent time in order to make sure you don't have to rush if an unforeseen delay occurs.  Be sure you have warm clothes and a blanket or sleeping bag if you are travelling through cold weather as well as food and water in case you get stranded (in any weather).  Make sure to have a well charged cell phone as well as a charging cord for the car as well as a portable charging battery.  If you are driving across ice or snow bring chains to put on your tires.
